Environmentally Conscious Design (ECD) requires concepts defined in many ISO standards; ISO 14001 is the least useful of those standards and can be easily and successfully ignored in the ECD process.  The overall concepts of ECD are best described in ISO 14006 and IEC 62430.  ISO 14006 shows the interaction of standards.  IEC 62430 directly addresses design, although supposedly in the terms of electronic and electrical equipment.   ISO 14062 describes product aspects in the design process. ISO 14040 and 14044 describe the application of Life Cycle Assessment.  The new standards on green house gasses, sustainability, energy management, ecoefficiency, mass balance and water footprint all provide supporing guidance. The challenge is to understand the basic concepts of each of the standards, and determine which, if any of them could apply to your organization.
