Chemicals are vital to our economy. They are used to develop medicines, provide refrigeration for our food supply, manufacture fuel for our vehicles, and build the microchip that runs our smartphones, among many others. When used properly, these chemicals richly benefit our society. However, if these chemicals are mishandled or fall into the hands of a terrorist, some of these same chemicals can cause great harm.

What are some of these chemicals that present the greatest risk to facilities? How can environmental, health, and safety (EHS) professionals make sure they and their organizations are prepared for an accidental release of hazardous chemicals or a direct attack on a facility? What security measures can be put into place to prevent these chemicals from falling into the wrong hands?

This presentation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will provide insights into these questions, as well as explain how the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) program relates to EHS professionals.

It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that hazardous and dangerous chemicals are not misused and do not fall into the wrong hands. DHS is working with a variety of industries and organizations across the country to ensure the security of our communities. To learn more, please visit www.dhs.gov/chemicalsecurity.
