Shipping Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste shipments are a multi-jurisdictional challenge for EHS managers. Persons signing their site’s hazardous waste manifests are certifying that all aspects of the waste shipment are in compliance with the US DOT and EPA regulations. For an activity that comes along every 90 or 180 days, it is essential that the EHS manager has a thorough understanding of the disparate, but mutually-applicable rules.

This program will benefit anyone with direct management responsibilities hazardous waste. Participants will learn:

  • The roles of the DOT and EPA in hazardous waste shipments
  • The 10 Steps of hazmat shipping
  • The unique or additional requirements for hazardous waste shipments under the DOT regulations, including
    • Hazmat classification of hazardous wastes, and state-only hazardous wastes
    • Special packaging relief for lab packs and reuse of packaging
    • Marking hazardous waste packages
    • Preparing shipping descriptions for hazardous waste
    • Impact of  the new e-Manifest rules on hazardous waste shipping documentation
    • The triggers to DOT’s security planning requirements
    • The additional training obligations for hazardous waste personnel

Participants will learn management strategies that will enable them gain confidence that they are meeting all their DOT and EPA regulatory obligations for hazardous waste shipments.
