Does your EHS training instill a Safety Habit?

Tuesday, August 29, 2017: 11:30 AM-12:30 PM
Sundance 1 (Omni Fort Worth)

Level of Course: Senior

This presentation focuses on professional EHS training aspects with regards to three areas:  Understanding or the “know or why to do”, Proficiency or the “how to do”, and Attitude to Behavior or the “want to do then do” which is referenced in this presentation’s title as a “Safety Habit”.

We will discuss the three components of a safety habit and provide a close parallel to what Dr. Steven R Covey calls “a habit” in his book; “The 7-Habits of highly effective people”.  Those who design, develop, and implement EHS training, must take a careful look at all components of this safety habit.  Professionals do a great job with the Understanding (Knowledge) and Proficiency (Skill) of training but is there much thought given to a worker’s attitude which, we hope, translates into the safe behaviors desired?

We will focus on why all three components are critical to success in creating a proactive safety culture.  In this part of the presentation, focus will be given specifically on the “attitude to behavior” component.  Here we can explore the work provided by Dr. John Keller, professor emeritus at Florida State U. and originator of the “ARCS” model for motivating learners, providing enhanced insight to the presentation.

Bringing it all together will be accomplished by tying the above mentioned  to the great work done by Dr. T. R. Krause in his book, “Leading with Safety” and exerts from another excellent resource, “The Speed of Trust” by Steven M. Covey.
