Hazardous material inventory at a Naval Maintenance Shipyard is managed by a community of experts called HazMat Central. This community exists to provide maintenance shops working on submarines with the hazardous material logistical support they need in order to meet their mission of repairing, maintaining and modernizing the Pacific Fleet of submarines during routine maintenance and refits. The key points will show and discuss how hazardous material inventory levels are managed through analysis and comprehensive review of demand history. We will also show what type of data points are used to extrapolate the levels.
The main tool used to accomplish these goals is a web-delivered hazardous materials tracking software called Hazardous Materials Management System (HMMS). HMMS is designed specifically for managing inventory that is classified as hazardous material. The session will highlight the use of Inventory Level Management functionality within the software. However, the goals don’t depend on the software, but instead depend on the expertise of the team to collect and analyze the correct data and the ability to skillfully manage the inventory.
The goal of the team at HazMat Central is to support the maintenance shops working on the submarines. The result is that the efficiency of how hazardous materials are procured, stocked and distributed to work centers is improved and disposal of hazmat as waste is drastically reduced.
