Celebration 8 (Peabody Orlando)

Level of Course: Mid

The Sawgrass Lake Restoration project involved various phases of work to restore a 25 acre lake and adjacent 14 acre wetland. The wetland was contaminated by over 50 years of trap and skeet shooting of lead shot by an adjacent shooting club. This technical session will present the methodologies used to excavate impacted soil, sediment and peat from the wetlands, the wet-process the material to remove, recover and recycle nearly 1 million pounds of lead shot, and the process and chemistry used to treat soils to meet TCLP and SPLP standards for onsite placemetn or offsite disposal. The presentation will provide a narrative, along with photo and videos of various pieces of process equipment never before used in conjunction for this purpose, and how the system was constructed, debugged and operated to process over 40,000 cubic yards of excavated material.
