8 Hour ICS Haz-Woper Refresher with Tabletop Exercise

Sunday, September 15, 2013: 8:00 AM-4:00 PM
Bayhill 24 (Peabody Orlando)

Level of Course: Senior

Through the use of a state of the art tabletop simulator 1:87 scale city, accompanying PowerPoint and group activities, the HAZWOPER instructors can deliver an impactful training program.

This session will allow trainers to demonstrate, through simulation, how communities can test their ability to respond to HazMat incidents. This instructional tool provides trainees with the opportunity to identify response and coordination issues that could arise during various HazMat scenarios and make the decisions to resolve those issues.

This session will focus on three popular HazMat training scenarios:

  1. Fixed Facility (rural) - accident involving a chlorine leak in a water treatment plant.
  2. Highway Accident (suburban) - describing an acetone release.
  3. Rail Accident (urban) -involving release of chlorine.

The exercises simplify and sequence events during a timeframe that, in reality, would be characterized by a series of complex issues occurring nearly simultaneously.

Exercise Goal and Objectives:

These exercises allow instructors to demonstrate to students the following:

  • Validation of coordination and communication capabilities during HazMat incidents.
  • Verification of policies and procedures for responding to HazMat incidents.
  • Identification of the overall strengths and weaknesses of HazMat plans.

Upon completion of these exercises, instructors will be able to use a similar tabletop exercise to teach trainees:

  • How to direct, coordinate, and control emergency activities using the Incident Command System (ICS).
  • How to alert, mobilize, and activate personnel and deploy equipment for emergency response and maintain operations until the situation is brought under control.
  • How to coordinate and disseminate timely/accurate information to the media and public.
