Purpose

An Atlanta private church school desired to build a new athletic complex on a former construction & demolition (C&D) landfill.  In order to do so, the site first needed to be rendered suitable for construction, then have a methane extraction system installed to control landfill gas.

History

The 23 acre landfill had been closed, and a soil cap placed over the entire area. The church acquired this property to construct an athletic complex. Investigations revealed the presences of methane gas levels exceeding regulatory standards. Under a design/build approach, the site was stabilized using dynamic compaction, then a series of 36” diameter recovery wells were installed. All wells were connected to an on site flare system.

Project Approach

The work included:

·         Dynamic compaction of the 23 acre site.

·         Installation of twelve 36” diameter gas extraction wells.

·         Flush mounted vaults and well heads were installed on each well.

·         Installation of HDPE piping from each of the wells to a main header line.

·         Installation of a skid mounted 350 CFM flare system.

·         Onsite fabrication of two 24” diameter HDPE condensate sumps, each  equipped with a QED AP4 submersible pump.
Once construction of the methane extraction system was complete, the athletic field and support facilities were built on the site. The system continues to operate as designed with significant reduction in the readings of methane gas from all monitoring points.
