scope/objectives

OSHA has finally made a formal Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to adopt the GHS system for
hazard communication in the United States. In addition, many countries have already started to require
labels and safety data sheets (SDSs) in the GHS (Globally Harmonized System) format.

methods

The first part of this presentation will discuss the implication and issues raised by the OSHS Proposed
Rulemaking and will address items raised in the OSHA proposal (and/or revised proposal or final rule if
one has been issued by the time of the conference.)

  • Substances – how the newly proposed classifications related to the existing ones.
  • Mixture classification – it’ll be more complicated now
  • SDSs and Labels – more information will be needed
  • Supplier data and your new responsibilities

developments/results

The second part of this presentation will discuss some strategies for reclassification that may be necessary
for companies who ship product to regions where the GHS is already in place and will discuss issues to be
addressed during re-classification for GHS purposes.
