Lithium batteries are the hazmat most on the radar when it comes to hazmat inspections.  Unfortunately, the rules regarding lithium batteries tend to be the most convoluted.  Not only are the scenarios different depending on the size of the battery and how it’s being shipped (e.g., alone, with equipment, or in equipment), but the regulations for lithium batteries change more frequently than any other type of hazmat.

This session would focus on the requirements for shipping excepted lithium batteries.  These are “smaller” batteries that would be common in consumer electronics (such as cell phones and laptops).  In particular, the session would cover how to:

  • Know if a battery is an “excepted” size,
  • Package the battery,
  • Mark the battery, and
  • Create documentation (if needed).

This session would NOT cover fully regulated lithium batteries.
