Level of Course: Entry

Spill prevention is a paramount goal for protecting the environment and your wallet.  As environmental professionals we should have a proactive as opposed to a reactive approach to spill prevention.  The intention of this presentation is to have the environmental professional take a step and back and review existing plans and designs for potential missed risk-enhancers.

We will outline both administrative and physical controls that could have, and in some cases should have, been in place to either prevent or mitigate releases of petroleum products and other hazardous chemicals.  Significant risk-enhancing procedural loopholes, secondary containment design errors, equipment faux pas, and human errors that have been observed and experienced will be explored.  These controls and risk-mitigating actions will be discussed in a practical manner with suggestions for improvement.
