A Work in Progress: Building a Successful EHS Career from the Ground Up

Whether a newcomer to EHS or a seasoned practitioner in the field, this presentation will provide information participants can apply to cultivating a successful career in our dynamic and challenging industry.  We will examine the three key elements in our ‘career construction’ project: the foundation, frame, and roof – and share helpful tips, common pitfalls, and ways to position yourself, your team, and your organization for success.  Drawing on 23 years’ experience in the EHS field, the instructor will lead the group through a dynamic discussion structured around the following outline:

Foundation: Build and maintain technical proficiency (Developing Yourself)

  • Invest in professional development – a need, not a luxury

  • Keep current through journals, Web groups, professional societies

  • Pursue technical certifications (e.g., PG, CHMM, CIH, CSP, HEM)

  • Oh no – now I have to write the report! (Embracing the power and necessity of the written word)

Frame:  Expand and strengthen your capacity (Developing Your Team)

  • Finding the discipline and energy to invest in others

  • The Tao of management (or, how to cook a small fish)

  • “Soft Skills” (e.g., Interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence)

  • Conducting performance evaluations (it’s about energy and direction, not correction and discipline)

Roof:  Refine and pursue your goals (Building on Your Successes)

  • Management versus Leadership: What’s my role in the organization?

  • Vision and Values – the sources of energy and direction

  • Networking and business development (not just for consultants)

  • Giving back: Mentoring/Investing in the next generation
