Reuse and redevelopment of uncontrolled landfill sites requires development of conceptual site models and remedies that consider not only the environmental conditions of a site but also the suitability of a site to support structures and the overall development.  This presentation will review environmental risk management considerations associated with the reuse and redevelopment of five historical municipal and industrial waste landfill sites.  The end uses of these sites include a municipal park, minor league baseball stadium, public safety training complex, manufacturing plant, and an airport.

The discussion of environmental and construction risk management considerations in the four different scenarios will include:

  • Characterization and mitigation of methane risks

  • Characterization and mitigation of human exposure risks

  • Development of structural support solutions in conjunction with environmental risk mitigation

The presentation will include a review of the challenges associated with the four projects during design, construction, and post redevelopment occupancy.  The presentation will also include a review of the positive collaboration between stakeholders that provided the framework for the success of each project.
