Flashpoint, Flammability or Frustration? Decoding Section 9 Testing Requirements

Monday, August 29, 2016: 4:00 PM-5:00 PM
Executive (Omni Shoreham)

Level of Course: Entry

Description

The new GHS requires that SDS sheets have test information under Section 9 – “physical and chemical properties”. However, tests pertaining to flammability, combustible dusts, and reactive chemicals are not typically well understood. Many IH and EHS specialists are unsure what information is needed to accurately assess and communicate these hazards.

Learning Objectives

This session will explore best practices when it comes to phsyico-chemical testing, looking at common methodologies, as well as some of the common questions that come up with new materials, including:

-          What is one key area that the new GHS requirements do not consider?

-          When are flashpoint, boiling point, and pH enough, and when do you need more information?

-          What other values are important when dealing with flammable gases and vapors?

-          How do you know when testing is “enough”?

-          What are key ‘failings’ to look out for on SDS’s?
