Air monitoring can be one of the most overlooked and/or misapplied aspects of numerous safety related matters. Air monitoring considerations are all too often an afterthought or a token gesture.

The proper application of air monitoring devices and the proper use of those devices by employees can make all the difference to the overall safety of an incident or activity. Good air monitoring practices are best described as “things that make you go, hmmmm..”

In this presentation, we will review some of the more common industrial portable air monitoring devices, their proper applications for spill response and confined spaces, and some of the more common mistakes and misconceptions in their use.

Devices discussed will include:

  • Multi-gas meters
  • PIDs/FIDs
  • Colormetric Reading Tubes

Topics discussed:

  • Calibration vs. Bump Testing
  • LEL % vs PPM
  • Pros and cons of PIDs vs Colormetric Reading Tubes
  • Use of the term “toxic” meters
