“Work Zone Safety and the Hazardous Materials Worker: Strategies and Knowledge for Working Safely On and Off the Road (Part II)

Tuesday, September 14, 2010: 4:00 PM-4:40 PM
International B (The Westin Peachtree Plaza)
The workshop will be conducted using the Small Group Activity Method (SGAM) whereby participants (learners) will use their skills and knowledge to solve real-life problems. This workshop strives to reduce the risks that hazardous materials workers and others associated with HAZMAT work face when they work on or near roadways and will use a “Hierarchy of Controls” approach as a blueprint for reducing hazards.
Participants will learn the importance of work zone safety training through the review of national injury and fatality data for roadway work zones, confined spaces, and OSHA’s Focus Four topics – Falls, Electrical, Struck By and Caught-in-between.  One or two recent traffic-related incidents involving roadway HAZMAT clean-up may be used as a case study.
Working in small groups, students develop formal traffic control plans for work zones using the 2009 U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration’s Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Part 6-Temporary Traffic Control Devices.
Additionally, students brainstorm types of personal protective equipment (PPE) required for working safely in the work zone and discuss specifications (ANSI, ISEA, OSHA) and limitations for some       types of PPE.
