Remedial System Installation at Yellowstone National Park – Summer 2009
Abstract

Yellowstone National Park is the crown jewel of the United States National Park Service. Located in the Northwest corner of Wyoming, with parts in Idaho and Montana, Yellowstone is the most visited National Park in the United States.  During the Summer of 2009, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WYDEQ) funded the design and installation of six remediation systems at six (6) contaminated sites within Yellowstone National Park.  Terracon, Inc. designed these systems which included Soil Vaper Extraction (SVE), Air Sparging (AS), Duel Phase Extraction (DPE), as well as Oxygen diffusion (iSOC).  Each system was designed based on the site characteristics and geology of each location. Greenleaf Environmental Services, LLC was contracted to install these systems during late Summer and Early Fall of 2009.

The system installation presented unique challenges, such as high-flow of tourists, natural forest fires, and wildlife.  The installation was a high-profile project and a successful collaboration of governmental agencies, the National Park Service and WYDEQ.
