Although ISO 14001 requires the identification of environmental impacts such as energy use, most enviromental management systems do not follow through to gain the benefits of proper environmental management of energy use. There are numerous reasons why EMSs have not been effective in energy management. To resolve this failure, the International Organization for Standardization is writing a new energy management system standard (50001) outside of the existing EMS and QMS standards committees.  The new standard can be implemented stand alone or can be used to expand an existing environmental management system to effectively include energy management.  The new standard provides a new way to look at the PDMS lodel and is integrated with ISO 9001.
