Remedial Action for Contaminated Soils and Sediment At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is operated under contract to the Department of Energy (DOE).  ORNL is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.  The Soils and Sediment Remediation Project was located within the confines of the Melton Valley region at ORNL.

The scope of the Melton Valley Soils and Sediment Project included remediation of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Impoundments, the Homogenous Reactor Experiment (HRE) Pond and various contaminated leak sites/soil contamination sites located throughout Melton Valley.  Additionally, inactive Low Level Waste Lines (LLWL) and process waste pipelines were  abandoned in place (grouted) or removed.  The remediation was performed as a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensaion, and Liability Act (CERCLA) remedial action.

As discussed in the Record of Decision (ROD), the selected remedial actions included:

• Remediation of surface impoundments in Melton Valley, including 4 impoundments at the HFIR Complex and the HRE Pond,
• Remediation of contaminated soil associated with historical releases of contamination related to the liquid low-level waste system and hydrofracture injection experiments.
• Remediation of inactive LLWL and process waste pipelines in Melton Valley through grouting and isolation of the lines.
• Remediation of localized hot spots.
