The protection of our environment from pharmaceutical waste has caught the attention of regulatory agencies and concerned citizens in recent years.  Health care facilities, pharmacies, and veterinary clinics increasingly understand that disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste is not exempt from regulation and enforcement.  The Environmental Protection Agency continues work on a Universal Pharmaceutical Waste (UPW) regulation which is intended to streamline hazardous pharmaceutical waste management when it is finalized.  At least two states already have UPW regulations in place – Florida and Michigan.  This presentation will focus on how one Florida hospital and research facility developed a program to comply with State UPW regulations.  Attendees will become familiar with the associated challenges involved with conducting waste determinations, selecting appropriate disposal containers, labeling, collection logistics, storage and disposal.  Attendees will also be able to identify examples of management and compliance strategies utilized in the process.
